State Minister for Higher and Technical Education Rajesh Tope said, "There was a need to find out a formula, wherein not only the government but private players can also extend support for research works in the universities."

Tope said that universities in the state were lagging behind in research work due to shortage of funds.

"Major emphasis should be given on research. Industry-university linkage is a must. Universities should be knowledge creators, not only knowledge disseminators," Tope said addressing the 73rd Indian History Congress, organised by Mumbai University at its Kalina campus.

The NCP minister also said that they have decided to provide financial assistance to women in the field of higher education.

"We have decided to provide financial assistance to women in higher education," he said.

Tope said the state government has also been providing education to the people from economically and socially backward class of the society.

"Maharashtra government has been generous in providing education in the fields of medical, agriculture and pharmacy to the people belonging from socially and economically backward class of the society," he added.

Maharashtra Governor and Chancellor of Mumbai University K Sankaranarayanan was also present for the function.
