Maharashtra government will organise a tree plantation conclave at Raj Bhavan on September 17, to highlight its mission of planting 50 crore saplings by 2019 and to conserve and protect rivers.
This will be the first plantation conclave in the country, a release issued by the state's forest department stated.
Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Women and Child Development Minister Pankaja Munde, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev of Isha Foundation will be among those present on the occasion.
"This conclave will send a positive message to people about environmental conservation and protection," Maharashtra Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said.
On July 1 2017, as part of the tree plantation programme 5.43 crore saplings were planted.
An MoU was then signed between Isha Foundation and the state government to carry out large scale plantation along the banks of rivers in Maharashtra under an initiative called Rally for Rivers.
"To accelerate both these drives and to create a mass movement the conclave has been organised at Raj Bhavan," Mungantiwar said.
"During the programme, sand artists will present their creative arts on conservation and plantation and each attendee will take an oath to plant trees and protect our biggest asset, the environment," he added.
