Baldev Harpal Singh, a 1989-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the new chief electoral officer (CEO) of Maharashtra, officials said Thursday.

He will oversee the Assembly elections in the state, expected to be announced by mid-September this year.

Singh replaced Ashwani Kumar who was the CEO earlier.

Singh was on central deputation before this, working as development commissioner of the Santa Cruz Exclusive Processing Zone, SEZ Mumbai.

Before that he was principal secretary in the state labour department.
