Maharashtra men rally to down Punjab at basketball meet

Maharashtra earned their maiden win as they notched up a 76-65 victory against fancied Punjab in a men's Group B league match of the Rs 5 lakh prize money 10th Savio Cup All-India Basketball Tournament here today.
The event for men and women is being held at the Don Bosco High School courts in Matunga.
The Maharashtra men turned over a 14-17 deficit in the first quarter to snatch a slender 27-26 lead at the end of the first half.
Siddhant Shine, with 20 points, top-scored for Maharashtra and Amit Gahlot chipped in with 17 points, while for Punjab Palpreet Singh scored 25 points and Gurinder Singh 14.

This was the second successive defeat for Punjab after they had been shocked by debutants Bhavnagar Youngsters 56-66 last night.
The young side from Gujarat got off to a rollicking start against the Punjab men, who arrived in Mumbai only yesterday morning, by opening up a 20-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Bhavnagar team maintained their edge in the remaining three quarters to complete a deserving win.
