The Maharashtra government has decided to set up a first of its kind monument for Param Vir Chakra awardees at the Birla Sports Centre here.
A decision to this effect was taken by Maharashtra state finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar today at a meeting chaired by him, which was attended by Revenue Department Principal Secretary Manu Kumar Shrivastav, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and others.
Incidentally, an announcement was made about it during the last session of the Maharashtra State Legislature.
"I directed the MCGM today to prepare a blueprint of the country's first ever monument for Paramveer Chakra awardees that will be set up at the Birla sports Centre. The Maharashtra state government had made this announcement in the Budget and had allocated Rs 5 crore for it," Mungantiwar told reporters here.
He said that the Maharashtra government is ready to allocate additional funds for the monument if the need arises.
The Param Vir Chakra is India's highest military award for the highest degree of valour.
Fourteen out of 21 army personnel were awarded the Param Vir Charkra posthumously.
Rama Raghoba Rane, who was a second lieutenant in the Indian Army's Bombay Sappers Corps of Engineers, was conferred the Param Vir Chakra in April 1948.
