The 89-year-old writer-activist, who has got a number of awards like Jnanpith, Padma Vibhushan and Magsaysay was admitted to the private Belle Vue Clinic superspecialty hospital four days ago after complaints of breathing trouble and other age-related health issues.
Hospital authorities had kept the news under wraps but it got known when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went to see her this evening.
Banerjee was there for around 20 minutes in the hospital.
Doctors said Mahasweta is better now and will be discharged after a week.
