A man, accused of raping a woman on the pretext of marrying her, has been acquitted by a Delhi court which pondered over the veracity of rape cases in recent times.
The court freed the man, a resident of Vikas Puri here, as the woman "retracted and turned hostile" and also said that she had willingly established physical relations with him.
It observed that recently a new expression is being used for a woman, who is alive and has levelled allegations of rape against a man, and she is now called as "rape survivor".
"Here, I would also like to mention that in recent times a new expression is being used for a rape victim i.E. A rape survivor. The prosecutrix, a woman or a girl who is alive, who has levelled allegations of rape by a man is now called a rape survivor.
"In the present case, the accused has been acquitted of the charge of rape as the prosecutrix retracted and turned hostile. In the circumstances such a person, an acquitted accused, who has been acquitted honourably, should he now be addressed as a rape case survivor? This leaves us with much to ponder about the present day situation of the veracity of the rape cases," Additional Sessions Judge Nivedita Anil Sharma said.
The man was acquitted of the charges of raping the woman on the pretext of marrying her and threatening to upload her pictures and video on social networking sites to defame her.
A case was registered against the man in February at Tilak Nagar Police Station on the woman's complaint that the man had been raping her from past six months on the false promise of marriage and had also threatened to defame her if she refused to maintain physical relations with him.
