A 60-year-old man died during a scuffle at central Delhi's Jama Masjid area, police said today.
The deceased has been identified as Zafar, who allegedly got involved in a scuffle which took place between his son, Naved (27) and a local, identified as Sanjiv (34), around 8 PM last night.
Zafar had a cardiac arrest during the scuffle and collapsed, following which he was rushed to a hospital and died during his treatment there, a senior police official said.
According to police, when Sanjeev was returning home from office in his scooter last evening, it was raining hard. His vehicle skid on a crowded road near Jama Masjid and he ended up splashing mud on Naved who was standing nearby, leading to an argument between the two.
Soon, locals intervened and the matter was settled, following which both went home.
Around an hour later, Naved, along with his father Zafar, went to Sanjiv's house and called him outside. They had a heated argument over the issue, which soon led into a scuffle between Sanjiv and Naved.
In no time, Zafar too allegedly got involved in the scuffle and suddenly collapsed. The locals informed the police and Zafar was rushed to Lok Nayak hospital, where preliminary medical examination revealed that he had had a cardiac arrest, the senior official said.
He further said, Zafar had an heart ailment. He died at the hospital on the wee hours today.
"We registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC and have arrested Sanjiv," DCP (Central) Parmaditya said.
Agitated locals today staged a protest in connection with the issue and demanded stricter action against the accused. Some of them also went to the police station and the situation came under control after a senior official intervened.
