While the police termed it as a case of suicide, the family suspected foul play. A magisterial inquiry has been marked into the incident.
The deceased, identified as Sushil Gehlot, an auto driver by profession, was the resident of 272-School Block in Shakarpur area.
"He was brought to the police station at around 2 PM after a call was received from his wife that he was beating her. He was an alcoholic. He used to beat his wife and 70-year-old mother if they refused to give him money for liquor.
He was detained and brought to the police station where he was kept in a lock-up and a Constable went to arrange food for him.
When the Constable returned at about 10.30 PM, he found Gehlot hanging from lockup gate.
"He committed suicide by hanging himself with the help of a string of his underwear from the rod of lockup's gate," said a police officer.
The constable informed his senior police officers and he was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
"We had formed a panel of doctors for the postmortem. A magistrate is inquiring into the case and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also been informed about the matter," said Joint Commissioner of Police (East) Sanjay Beniwal.
Police also said that he was drunk when he was brought to the police station and he turned violent and started banging his head on the wall and hurt himself.
A Constable was also sent to his home to inform about his violent behaviour to his family.
