Additional Sessions Judge Rajender Kumar Shastri handed down the jail term to Nem Singh after holding him guilty of firing at Kailash Bhardwaj, who had been his partner in cable network business in the Sangam Vihar area in south Delhi.
"The convict (Nem) has been found guilty of firing at the victim (Kailash) knowing well or having reason to believe that by his act, if death of Kailash is caused, he may be guilty of murder.
The judge directed that Rs 10,000 shall be given to the victim as compensation.
Nem and his associates, Ravinder Singh and Sanjay were facing trial in the case after the victim's friend had filed a case with the police, stating that in October 2007, when Kailash went to collect the money at his residence, he was shot at.
On reaching Nem's place, an altercation took place between them and Ravinder Singh and Sanjay caught hold of Kailash and the accused fired at him, according to it.
The court, however, acquitted accused Ravinder and Sanjay of the charges of attempting to murder Kailash, observing that there was nothing on record to establish that Nem acted in concert with them.
