Special Judge Shail Jain awarded the jail term to Punjab resident Balvinder Singh and also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.
"Considering the fact and circumstances of the case that the convict was found in possession of 44 kgs of poppy straw, which is only 6 kgs short of being a commercial quantity, the convict is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 5 years and to pay fine of Rs 10,000 for under the provisions of the NDPS Act," the court said.
In May 2012, the police charged him with several sections of the NDPS Act.
Singh, however, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.
