Man killed as car rams into poles near Czech embassy

A 24-year-old man was killed while his wife was injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling hit two poles in the wee hours today in front of the Czech Republic Embassy.
Police suspect it to be a case of drunken driving.
Patrick was returning with his 22-year-old wife Sonal Chopra from a get-together in the High Commission of Singapore, where he was a staffer, when their WagonR car hit two electricity poles around 1 AM, said a senior police officer.
The accident comes less than a month after their marriage, said the police.
Both of them were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where Patrick was declared brought dead while his wife is currently out of danger and is under observation, he said.

It seems from the sequence of events that Patrick was drunk and lost control of the vehicle that was allegedly being driven in high speed, he added.

Police also ruled out involvement of any second vehicle in the accident.
The couple was on their way to their home in Moti Nagar after the get-together at the high commission.
The post-mortem will confirm whether he was in an inebriated state, said the officer.
Sikkim Police constable Gopal Kumar Basnett made the PCR call about the incident after he heard a loud noise.
It was a speeding car which had crashed into a couple of poles one after the other after it climbed on to the pavement next to the embassy, he told police.

The car first hit a pedestrian crossing signboard and then an electric pole in quick succession before coming to a halt, police added.
The car in which the couple was travelling was badly damaged with its windscreen cracked.
Patrick worked as a clerk with the High Commission where his father had also worked in the past. The officer said that he married Sonal in January.
