Man kills wife, daughter; tries to commit suicide 2 days later

A man allegedly hacked his wife and teen-aged daughter to death at their house in North 24 Parganas district, stayed there for two days and tried to commit suicide today, police said.

The incident occurred at Machlandapur under Habra police station limits.

Sekhar Debnath allegedly killed his wife Mithu and daughter Puja on Saturday, when the two victims were last seen.

Puja was appearing for this year's Madhyamik, the school leaving examination of the state board, police said.

Debnath replied incoherently when neighbours asked him why his daughter has not been seen going to the examination centre during the day.

The neighbours found him heavily drunk, and also got a foul smell coming from his house, police said.

Debnath tried to hang himself inside the house but the neighbours entered on time, stopped him and informed the police.

Debnath has become debt ridden, the neighbours said adding that he used to earn his breads by stitching bags but he had lost a large amount of money after investing it in chit funds.
