A man was nabbed by Tihar security allegedly when he was throwing prohibited items in the jail premises from outside the boundary wall following which he was handed over to police, prison officials said today.
On September 19, at about 5 AM, the Tamil Nadu Special Police personnel patrolling the area near tower no. 10 and 11 noticed a suspicious car, with three persons inside, stop at a red light on Vidya Road, Additional Director General and PRO of Tihar, Mukesh Prasad said.
One of the persons came out of the vehicle, walked for about 50 meters and suddenly threw a packet inside jail number 4 from outside the prison boundary wall, the ADG said.
The TSP personnel and jail staff chased the man and later caught him. A mobile phone and two tobacco pouches were recovered from the packet thrown in the prison, he said.
The matter was reported to Hari Nagar police station and the accused, who was identified as Amit Sharma, and recovered items were handed to them for further action.
"During interrogation the accused revealed that he had thrown the items for one of his relatives who was jailed in Tihar," a senior police officer said.
Earlier this month, Tihar prison administration had terminated services of four staffers, including an assistant jail superintendent and three warders, for their alleged role in an incident of smuggling of banned items inside the jail, which was caught on CCTV cameras.
