A 45-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Kudmura forests range today here, days after an elderly woman died in a similar incident.
"The victim had gone to pluck tendu leaves in the forests near Gurma village under Shyang police station limits when he came face to face with the elephant," said Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Korba, Vivekanand Jha.
The deceased is identified as Ramsai Majhwar, a native of Katradera village.
Soon after getting the information, police personnel and forest officials rushed to the spot, he said.
Majhwar's next of the kin was given an instant relief amount of Rs 25,000, the DFO said, adding that after completing the formalities, a compensation amount of Rs 3.75 lakh would be given to them.
On May 12, a wild pachyderm stomped to death Fagni Bai (70), a native of Barpali village, in the same forest range while she was collecting tendu leaves.
The thick forested northern Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, and Korea districts, often sees human-elephant conflict.
The region has witnessed death of several tribal people and incidents of widespread damage to their houses and crops by rogue elephants in past years.
Last year, six villagers were killed in separate incidents of human-elephant conflict in Korba district alone.
