Madhya Pradesh's first 1400 MW atomic power station coming up in tribal dominated Mandla district does not pose a threat to biodiversity within the 30 km radius of the proposed project site, a study said.
The study has been carried out by Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (JNKVV), Jabalpur, at the behest of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai and it took more than two years for JNKVV to conduct the study which concluded recently.
It is crucial to keep a watch on biodiversity before and after setting up of a nuclear plant, JNKVV Professor S D Upadhyay told PTI today.
The finding of the study revealed that scientists have found almost negligible threatened species of flora or fauna in 30 kms radius of the proposed site, he said.
About 187 plant species were found within the proposed site that are commonly available in other parts of the state, including 64 species of trees, 48 herbs, 39 grass, 20 climbers and six fungus species.
Out of the 114 fauna species found, 11 were of moths, 15 butterflies, four dragonflies, two beetles, 26 fishes, four amphibians, eight reptile species, 36 aves species and eight species of mammals, Upadhyay said.
Aquatic fauna, included fishes 'Rohu' and 'Katla' in river Narmada traversing close to the project site, were found in the study, Upadhyay added.
Almost 60 per cent of the area of the site is covered with water while remaining part is barren land, with a small area of cultivated land with poor soil conditions.
