A national conference of NHRC today suggested that the media should have guidelines for the depiction of women so as to not to affect women's welfare.
Media has an important role to play in addressing the concerns of women in the society, and it is required that the media frame its own guidelines for depiction of women so that such images and material may not harm women's welfare, it was suggested at the conference on 'Human Rights of Women'.
The conference organised by National Human Rights Commission also mooted a Bill of Women's Rights to re-affirm the country's commitment toward gender equality and women's empowerment.
It was also felt that all stakeholders should be briefed on new laws, projects and programmes in simple language.
Among other suggestions, it was proposed that the law on sexual harassment at workplace be extended to the unorganised sector and the complaints mechanism should be effectively implemented in all sections of the economy.
The conference made several recommendations for empowerment of women in society, including on women's sexual, reproductive and health rights, violence against women.
NHRC Chairperson, Justice K G Balakrishnan said the Commission would study these recommendations and send them to the appropriate authority.
He assured that the Commission would continue to pursue the implementation of these recommendations.
