The Meghalaya government today reviewed security preparedness ahead of the Independence Day celebration in the state after militant groups called for a general shutdown on August 15, an official statement said.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma reviewed the preparations for maintenance of law and order in the state ahead of the ensuing Independence Day celebrations in which Home Minister Roshan Warjri and police chief P J P Hanaman attended, it said.
"The Chief Minister shared his observations and findings during a similar review meeting taken by him recently in Garo Hills with senior police officers of the Western Range. A reference was made to the bandh calls by the proscribed HNLC in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region and the ASAK in the Garo Hills region," political department under secretary B Khongwir said in a statement.
He said the Chief Minister appealed to all sections of the population in the state to come out in large numbers and demonstrate their strength and resolve to stand up against anti-national forces.
"This would send a strong message that the people of the state are mature and cannot be intimidated by threats of reprisals from such forces," the official quoted Sangma as stating.
Earlier in the day, state Home Minister Roshan Warjri and Parliamentary Secretary in-charge Home W D Sangma also reviewed the preparedness of the law and order machinery for the ensuing Independence Day celebrations.
