However, when the time came, Redmayne snagged the honour for playing Stephen Hawking in 'The Theory of Everything.'
Apparently prepared to take the stage, Keaton appeared to have an acceptance speech in hand as the nominees were called.
Keaton may have had to return empty-handed, but 'Birdman' scored four wins at the ceremony including best director for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and best picture.
