No one was injured in the fire at the Karuppur Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple. The blaze was doused by fire and rescue service personnel in an half-hour long operation, they said.
The idol of the deity was intact, they said.
The mishap comes close on the heels of a major blaze in the Goddess Meenakshi temple in Madurai that destroyed 40 shops and anther minor fire at Sri Athi Kumbeswarar temple here earlier this month.
According to police, in the incident today, smoke was noticed around 1 PM by the locals.
