Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte today demanded formation of third state Finance Commission for Goa, which is due for last six years.
"Before the recent zilla parishad elections, the state government had promised to empower these bodies. But the powers and finances cannot be given in the absence of third state finance commission," Khaunte told reporters here.
He said the appointment of third state finance commission is pending since 2008-09.
"The last government led by Congress had said it will appoint a committee for deciding on the state finance commission. But it never became a reality," he said.
"In 2012, the present Chief Minister, Laxmikant Parsekar-led committee for third state finance commission was formed. Their role was to study the report of second finance commission and recommend the third state finance commission," he said.
But till date, nothing has been done on this front, he said.
"The delay in appointment of the third state finance commission has left a bad impression on 13th and 14th Finance Commissions of the country," Khaunte said.
This has also caused embarrassment for Goa, he said, adding that "in the absence of state finance commission, the local bodies like zilla panchayat are not getting funds."
Khaunte said he has already met Governor Mridula Sinha urging her to issue proper direction to the state government to form the commission.
