Five policemen were among nine persons injured today when a mob clashed with the police over the recovery of the two bodies of minor sisters in Churkhi area of Jalaun.
Acting swiftly, the state government has removed Jalaun's Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Shanker, and attached him with the DGP headquarters at Lucknow.
SP (railway) Lucknow, Sunil Kumar Saxena, has replaced him, an official spokesman said in Lucknow.
The bodies of Netu (16) and Vaishali (18), packed in sacks, were found in the Noon river yesterday.
While the family members alleged that the girls were kidnapped on September 22, police claimed that they had eloped on the same night.
Family members of the victims today kept the bodies at Machchar crossing and accused police of shielding the accused.
Demanding immediate arrest of the accused they threatened to cremate the bodies at the crossing, sources said.
Later, police reached the spot and used water cannon to disperse the agitating crowd.
The crowd started pelting stones in which Circle Officer Kuldeep Singh, in-charge of Atta police station P K Yadav, in-charge of Churkhi police station Vimlesh Katiyar, in-charge of Chowki area outpost S N Bundela and in-charge of Ramganj outpost Mateen Khan were injured.
The crowd was later pacified on the assurance of the senior officers.
District Magistrate Ram Ganesh said that in-charge of Kuthaund Praveen Yadav, inspector Santosh Kumar posted at Orai police station, SOs Dhaniram Bhaskar and Prem Sagar have been suspended.
IG Kanpur zone, Ashutosh Pandey, who reached the spot, admitted laxity on the part of police.
