Display of a steam locomotive and coach model made out of recyclable cardboard and corrugated paper were highlights of the World Heritage Day celebration by the Central Railway (CR) here Thursday.

According to CR chief spokesperson Sunil Udasi, a life -size model of a steam loco and a heritage coach were unveiled by CR General Manager D K Sharma in the gallery of the passenger walkway towards platforms 14 to 18 at the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to mark the day.

Highlighting the salient features of the models, Udasi said six truck loads of materials and approximately 15 ton corrugated paper, recycled paper, card board and some plywood were used to craft 23-feet-long steam engine and 22-feet-long coach.

He said the models were used to display pictorially the many firsts of the erstwhile Great Indian Peninsula Railway and the first passenger train in India that ran on April 16, 1853.

"The models were a major attraction for passengers and others. The installation of a live loco whistle and a selfie point in the displayed coach model add to the visitor attraction," Udasi said.

He said the displays were part of heritage-related activities undertaken by the CR to observe the day.
