Modernise slaughter houses: Govt to poultry industry

The Tamil Nadu government today urged the poultry industry to focus on modernisation of slaughter houses and undertake proper anti-mortem examination of animals.
The poultry industry should focus on modernisation of slaughter houses and proper anti-mortem examination of animals prior to slaughter that will support efforts of the government in ensuring safe foods to consumers, Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Additional Director R Pandian said.
He was speaking at "Meat Tech 2014" organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here.
"The state government has been taking efforts in preventing and controlling meat adulteration and invited participatory approach of farmers, meat processors and scientists to user in livestock revolution," a CII release quoted him as saying.
Suguna Foods Managing Director G B Sundararajan said the meat and poultry sector was expected to grow in double digit over the next few years.
"The meat and poultry sector has a huge market size of around Rs 63,000 crore with a CAGR of 10 per cent for the last 10 years and the growth will be in double digit in the coming years," he said.
CII Tamil Nadu Chairman Ravi Sam welcomed global players to come out with a framework to further strengthen and bring latest technologies to create meat and poultry processing industries to pitch into global market, the release said.
