Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said that people have lost faith in democracy as the government "failed" to enthuse people and instill a sense of ownership in the system.
"Today, the biggest danger for our democracy is that people have lost confidence in a system which they themselves have built, and you as an important organ of our democratic system, have to play your part in restoring it," Modi said in an inaugural address to 'All Gujarat Public Prosecutors' Seminar' here today at Mahatma Mandir.
"After independence, we have failed to enthuse people and to instill a sense of ownership towards Government in specific and system of democracy in general," he said.
He cited the example of "attitude of people" towards state transport authority buses and postal services.
"People are not taking it seriously as they have lost faith in its deliverability," he said.
In the same breath, Modi mentioned the issuance of a stamp of Lord Krishna as a charioter of Arjun, a picture which symbolises Arjun's dilemma in Mahabharata.
"Now, this kind of postal stamps are impossible to be issued as there is a flood of secularism in the country and interestingly this kind of stamp was issued by the same party's government which claims itself as a secular government," he added.
Describing judiciary as a vital organ of our democratic system and prosecutors its part, he expressed confidence that such seminar would play a major role to sensitise them about the responsibility of playing an important part in creating an environment of confidence in society.
