Piaggio Vehicles today said it has expanded its partnership with charitable organisation RED, under which a part of the money generated from the sale of each of its to-be-launched scooter Vespa RED will be used to fight AIDS in India.
The iconic Vespa RED is the product of a tie-up between the Italian auto major and RED.
To be launched only in the Indian market, a part of the money generated from the sale of of every (Vespa)RED will be used to finance Global Fund grants that support the fight against AIDS in India, Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd (PVPL) said in a statement.
The PVPL is the wholly-owned subsidiary of the Italian auto major Piaggio.
The partnership was first unveiled at a Global Fund event attended by Bill Gates and Government Ministers in Rome in June 2016, it said, adding, Vespa was the first (RED) partner to bring an automotive product to market.
(RED) has been raising money and awareness for the fight to end AIDS since 2006, generating more than USD 475 million dollars to date with a focus on supporting Global Fund grants, it said.
For the first time, money raised through sales of all (Vespa)RED products in India will go to support Global Fund grants right in India programs with a specific focus on ensuring that HIV+ women have access to the services they need to ensure their babies are born HIV free, the release said.
Each (Vespa)RED sold can provide more than 165 days of life saving antiretroviral medication medication that can help keep a pregnant mother alive and prevent her from passing the virus to her unborn baby, it added.
