churches across the Dakshina Kannada district to celebrate the feast of Nativity or 'Monthi Fest' marking the birthday of Mother Mary.
The day is celebrated as the feast of Immaculate Conception. The Konkani Christians also paid obeisance to Mother Mary, celebrating the festival of the new corn harvest.
Flowers are offered to the Mother Mary in the churches after reciting 'Novena' every day beginning August 30. The paddy or first grain is brought to the Altar in a procession and blessed by the priest, church sources said.
People from Mangalore residing anywhere in the world celebrate the festival with relegious fervour.
