Amid tight security measures police has arrested 54 people in connection with a clash that erupted in Shamli district, in which a youth was killed, a senior police official said today.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Prakash Kumar told reporters today that police has registered cases against 54 people for disturbing peace and harmony, inciting violence and indulging in rioting in the area.
Police has registered cases against as many as 319 people for inciting violence.
26-year-old Ahsan was shot dead and over 10 people were injured when two groups exchanged fire and damaged public property over dumping of garbage last evening.
The situation, however, remains calm and no untoward incident was reported today, police said, adding security arrangements have been beefed up and shops and business establishments remained shut for the second consecutive day.
