A 38-year-old mother of two was today sentenced to 11 years rigorous imprisonment for possessing 300 grams of heroin by a Delhi court.
Special Judge Shail Jain, who convicted Kanta, a widow, under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on her.
"The convict stands convicted for the offence punishable Under Section 21 NDPS Act, 1985. Considering the fact that the quantity of heroin recovered from the possession of convict is more than commercial quantity as she was found in possession of 300 grams of heroin and there is no explanation submitted by her for possession of such huge quantity of 300 grams of heroin, hence convict Kanta is sentenced to undergo RI for 11 years and to pay fine of Rs one Lakh...," the court said.
Kanta was apprehended by police on July 8, 2012 after she was found in possession of 300 grams of heroin.
However, Kanta during the trial had claimed that she was falsely implicated in this case.
"Nothing was recovered from my possession. On the date of incident I was washing clothes at my house when two persons came and told me that my brother had been implicated in a case. I went to the police station. Later on I was implicated in the present case," she had told the court.
The judge, however, brushed aside Kanta's claim and said, "I conclude that testimony of the prosecution witnesses is consistent and trustworthy. The recovery of contraband from the possession of accused is clearly established.
