A tripartite MoU involving the DTC, the DMRC and the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) Ltd will be signed on December 26 to roll out common mobility card for metro and bus services, possibly from the first day of new year, a Delhi government officer said.
The scheme for the use of Delhi Metro's smart card to travel in 200 Delhi Transport Corporation and 50 cluster buses is expected to commence from January 1, he said.
"A memorandum of understanding (MoU) involving the DTC, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the DMITS will be signed on December 26," the official said.
A fleet of over 1,600 buses is run by the DIMTS under the Cluster scheme. The DTC runs about 3,900 buses.
The Finance department of the Delhi government has given its approval for procurement of more secured access module (SAM) chips to be fitted with ticketing machines of cluster scheme buses, said a source.
"All the cluster buses are expected to come under the ambit of common mobility in next 2-3 months. The DTC too has been asked to make preparations for the same," said the source.
The common mobility will be facilitated through use of the SAM chip to be fitted with electronic ticketing machines (ETMs) used by bus conductors to issue paper tickets to the passengers.
The chips are a kind of smartcard installed permanently in the equipment interacting with the cards or tickets used to enhance the security and cryptography performance in devices to perform secure transactions in paying terminals.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation sources said over 70 per cent of its daily commuters who numbered over 27 lakh as per September 2017 data, used smart cards for travel.
