MoU on nationalisation of rivers to be shown to people: Goa CM

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar today said the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Centre on nationalisation of rivers in the state would be signed only after taking people into confidence.
"The MoU will be shown to the people of Goa before it is signed. People will be taken into confidence," he said.
Parrikar was responding to a question related to the opposition expressed by certain sections of people to the proposed nationalisation of the rivers in Goa.
Under the project, the National Inland Waterways Authority and the Goa government have to sign an MoU to develop the state's rivers.

Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari, during his recent Goa visit, had said the Centre would provide funds for the project while the ownership of the rivers would remain with the state government which will also have to maintain them.
Certain sections of the people in Goa have expressed apprehension about the project claiming traditional fishermen and those dependent on rivers would lose authority over the water bodies.
