Opposing Madhya Pradesh government's plan to impose an additional levy of Re 1 on petrol and 50 paisa on diesel, state Congress President Arun Yadav today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene on the issue.
"The state government is already levying 31 per cent VAT, one per cent entry tax and Rs 3 additional tax on petrol and 27 per cent VAT, one per cent Entry Tax and Rs 1.50 additional tax on diesel.
"Besides, it is planning to levy additional Re 1 more on petrol and 50 paisa on diesel which is totally unjustified but the state (Madhya Pradesh) government is hell bent on doing so," Yadav said in a letter to Modi.
The Congress leader in his letter also urged the Prime Minister to intervene on the issue and prevent the state government from levying additional tax on consumers.
He further said that though from January to June 2016, there was an increase in the prices of petrol and diesel, the prices have come down after decline in the rate of crude at international level.
"You are already aware that Madhya Pradesh government is levying maximum tax on petrol and diesel in the country and is not passing the benefit of decline in the prices of crude at international level to the consumers," Yadav said.
"The consumers are already burdened with rising inflation and the state government is putting more pressure on it by planning to add additional levy on petrol and diesel," he said.
Yadav said that on one hand, the Centre has passed the GST bill with the support of all political parties to give relief to people from high tax rates, the state government on the other is putting additional levy on them to trouble them.
