The Madhya Pradesh government is working on a new insurance scheme that will assure minimum income to farmers in case of damage to crops due to natural disaster or other reasons, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said today.
Inaugurating the two-day seminar on National Conference on Crop Insurance here, Chouhan said the state government's focus is that farming should be a profitable profession.
"Farming is the only profession, which is devoid of minimum income slab. Therefore, there is a need to frame a crop insurance policy which assures farmers a minimum income in case of damage to his crop due to any reason whether natural or other," Chouhan said.
Sharing the details about the state government's roadmap for the scheme, the Chief Minister said in next few days government will come out with a draft of this scheme which will be discussed with Centre also.
"In this policy we want that farmer should be compensated by a minimum average income which he had expected to draw from his produce," Chouhan added.
On the back of agriculture growth which was more than 20 per cent in last two financial years, the state revenue collection continues to remain high, therefore farmers need to be given extra attention, he said.
He also informed that irrigated agriculture land in the state has jumped to 75 lakh hectares from 3.5 lakh hectares in last seven years.
