Mumbra building collapse:Court rejects TMC officer's bail plea

A local court today rejected the bail application of assistant commissioner of Thane Municipal Corporation, Babasaheb Andhale in connection with the Mumbra building collapse in which 74 people were killed.
Andhale in his application filed before the additional sessions court judge K R Warrier sought the relief, saying that chargesheet was not filed in the stipulated time of 60 days after the collapse of the building.
74 people were killed and many others injured when an under-construction building, located in Lucky Compound near Shil Phata in Mumbra, had caved in on April 4.
Out of 27 accused in the case, 20 accused are in the custody, five others are absconding and two accused are out on bail.
The Crime Branch on Tuesday filed a chargesheet against all the accused which included real estate developers, civic officials and a local corporator and charged them with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act, among others.
The accused include two builders Abdul Salim Aziz Siddiqui, and Jamil Ahmed Jalaluddin Shaikh (who built the structure), Thane Deputy Municipal Commissioners Deepak Chavan, Sreekant Sarmokdam; Assistant Municipal Commissioners Babasaheb Andale, Shyam Thorbole, civic engineer Subash Rawal, municipal officer Subash Waghmare, Corporator Hira Patil, Constable Jehangir Sayyed. Material suppliers, a local journalist and a photographer, among others, also face various charges.
