Secretary for Municipal Affairs Dr Maongwati Aier told reporters today that Kohima was fortunate to be listed among the 98 cities in the country.
Stating that the project to develop the state capital into a Smart City would kick off from January 2016, he said the department, in coordination with the Kohima Municipal Council, would be engaging in creating mass awareness in all 19 wards of the city to overcome the problems of the land holding system.
In this regard, Aier sought the support and cooperation of the people.
Transforming into a Smart City, the state capital would have e-governance for computerised grievances and redressal system and computerised citizens' facilitation centre, he said.
"We will have about 100 CCTV installed at prime areas to check encroachment of government land and also illegal disposal of waste as well as checking of crimes. The Smart City will include online payment for trade licenses," he said.
Dr Aier said Kohima would have automatic water supply metre reading and smart billing system to solve the water crisis, besides solving the problems for power supply, solid waste management and sanitation.
It would also have green space provision, solar energy, better health and educational facilities, while all wards of Kohima would have community culture centres and open air theatres to promote and preserve the culture and tradition.
On the total area for implementation of the project, Aier said 250 acres would be retrofitted with and 25 acres would be the re-developed Kohima city, 125 acres within and on the outskirts of Kohima town would be taken up for fresh development as Smart City.
