"The prisoner, identified as Shamal Dinesh Biswas, was convicted in a murder case and was serving a life imprisonment in the central jail here," Dhantoli Police Inspector Rajan Mane said.
According to the officer, the prisoners, including Shamal, had gathered for lunch around 11.30 am today.
"However, during the counting of the prisoners held around 1.30 pm, he was not found," Mane added.
Police have launched a massive search operation to trace the prisoner, the officer said.
He was earlier lodged in a Kolhapur jail, but was transferred to Nagpur jail last year.
