While participating in the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor's address, the legislators said that fencing of the Indo-Myanmar border has the potential to affect free movement and the traditional social and economic ties between the people on both sides of the border.
Minister for School Education Yitachu said that if the fencing is erected along the border touching Nagaland, it will even divide the house of the Angh (King) of Longwa village in Mon district.
Minister for Health and Family Welfare, P Longon, who hails from Pangsha, appealed to the House to initiate serious thought and make concerted efforts to stop the border fencing work not only in Pangsha but also in any part of Nagaland along the Indo-Myanmar International Border.
Construction of border fencing in Pangsha is a direct violation of Article 371 (A) because both the Indian and Myanmar government have failed to consult and take on board the legitimate land owners (Nagas) in this regard as land and its resources belonged to the land owners as far as the provision of Article 371 (A) is concerned, he said.
