Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi today strongly condemned the terror attack in New York which claimed the lives of at least eight people.
A 29-year-old Uzbek man shouting 'God is great' ploughed a pickup truck down a crowded bike path near the World Trade Centre in New York. At least 11 people were also injured in the ISIS-inspired plot termed as the deadliest terrorist attack on the US city since 9/11.
"Strongly condemn the terror attack in New York in which 8 people were killed and several injured... perpetrators and those who support and shelter them should be punished for this crime against humanity," Naidu said in a series of tweets.
The prime minister said his thoughts are with the families of the deceased.
"Strongly condemn the terror attack in New York City. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased & prayers with those injured," Modi tweeted.
Terming it an unacceptable act of "brutal" terror against innocent citizens, Sonia Gandhi said, "Our heart goes out to the families of those who have lost their family members."
She said India wages a battle against the menace of terrorism every day and has made innumerable sacrifices in this battle, and called for a global effort to combat terror.
"The New York attack is once again a stark reminder that the international community should work towards a concerted and sustained fight against the global network of terror," Sonia Gandhi said in a statement.
