The revival of Naini Lake here has run into troubled waters with the Delhi government refusing to take up the task of cleaning it owing to North MCD's "refusal" to give a go-ahead to the Tourism Department in this regard.
In a letter to the Mayor of North MCD, Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra has accused the civic body of being "unable" to take any decision regarding the government's proposal to take up the responsibility of upkeep of the lake located in North Delhi's Model Town locality.
When contacted, Mayor Sanjeev Nayyar said that MCD had already decided against handing over the lake to the Delhi government and that it will itself look after its revival and tourism-related activities.
However, Mishra warned against boating or associated activities in the lake, saying it should be a place to relax for the locals and should not be used for tourism. The government had earlier come out in favour of boating.
"The government's offer is lying with the standing committee of North MCD for a long time. It has been unable to take any decision in this regard. So I would like to request you (MCD) to take up the task on your own. We are unable to provide any assistance in this regard," Mishra wrote.
The AAP government had said that it will implement ecologist Prof C R Babu's plan for reviving the lake's ecosystem without any engineering reinforcement.
Naini Lake, which had housed a variety of flora and fauna at one point, has ecologically degraded in recent years. The water level of the lake is at an all-time low while its depth has also reduced by a good 15 metres.
Naini lake's conservation has been a major issue among the locals in the recent past. Young people in the area have also been using social media to mobilise support for the cause.
