Actress Nandita Das has mesmerised the audience at the prestigious Museum of Moving Image (MoMI) in New York with her CinePlay 'Between the Lines'.
'Between the Lines', which Nandita co-authored with Diya Jagdale and made her debut as a playwright and stage director two years ago, was screened at the packed theatre at MoMI on October 25.
"I am overwhelmed by the response at MoMI. For the first time I got to see it (the production) on such a big screen, with such good acoustics... Right from its inception 'Between the Lines' has been an incredible journey and I am glad to get so many opportunities to share it," she said.
The next screening is scheduled for today at Yale University, where Nandita, who had earlier been conferred the Knight of the Order of Letters and Arts and had been on the jury of the Cannes Film Festival twice, has been selected for the World Fellow Programme.
She will herself present the CinePlay at the prestigious university with a screening at the Whitney Humanities Center Auditorium at Yale University.
"Between the Lines" is a contemporary play set in urban India where well-educated, affluent couples enacted by Nandita and her real life husband Subodh Maskara find themselves caught between modernity and tradition. The play explores the relationship between a lawyer couple who end up arguing on opposite sides of a criminal trial.
Nandita, who has worked in 10 languages and made her mark in films like 'Earth' and 'Bawandar' is mentoring CinePlay, a new genre of cinema weaving the magic of theatre. The alternative content production firm with the same name has been founded by Maskara.
After Yale, the next showing of CinePlay 'Between the Lines', would be held in Chicago on November 23 and November 24.
Maskara, Founder and CEO of CinePlay said, "We are at the cusp of very exciting times at CinePlay. We are committed to documenting and making the wonderful stories from theatre accessible to larger audiences as we move forward."
CinePlay has completed five productions and another 12 are in the pipeline as it aims to bring forth strong stories from theatre in a cinematic form.
The CinePlays are currently presented across the country and internationally at various venues, in addition to its dedicated video on demand platform.
