The Indian Naval Academy has plans to increase its cadet intake by 2020 to meet the shortage of officers in the force, a senior official said today.
Chief of Personnel Vice Admiral AK Chawla said the deficit was due to multiple reasons and one of them was the stringent entry procedure.
"We have an intake of 1,200 cadets. The Navy faces a shortage of around 12 per cent. We are right now in the process of expanding our infrastructure. As soon as we complete the second phase by around 2020, we will increase the intake by 1,700," the officer said.
The chief of personnel made the comments at the launch of the trailer of a National Geographic documentary on the Indian Naval Academy, the largest in Asia.
"Inside the INA -- an hour-long documentary accurately captures how the men and women of the Indian Navy are trained and shaped into future Naval heroes who serve the nation.
"It gives a riveting view into the meticulous mental and physical training that each candidate undergoes ... The documentary will be aired on Independence Day at 9 pm," said Swati Mohan, Business Head, National Geographic.
