Over a fortnight after Narmada Control Authority (NCA) gave its approval to Gujarat Government for raising the height of Sardar Sarovar Dam to 138.68 metres, the body has given permission to Sardar Sarovar Nigam Limited (SSNL) for installation of gates and to construct piers and overhead bridge.
In the absence of gates, the dam was overflowing for the last two months and the installation of spillways piers will take the dam to its full height of 138 meters, an official release said here today.
NCA, at the behest of Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, has given permission to SSNL to carry out Phase-I proposal comprising construction of piers, overhead bridge and installation of gates in open or raised position at Sardar Sarovar project as per the approved design.
The projects authorities have been asked to comply with the condition as laid down by the two sub groups of NCA, the release said.
In the absence of NCA's permission, the construction work at the dam site in Kevadia colony came to stand still.
NCA, on June 12, gave its approval to Gujarat for raising the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam to 138.68 metres from the present 121.92 metres, in a decision that will benefit parched regions of the state.
