Leaders of Congress, NCP and MNS in Pune Municipal Corporation today passed a resolution demanding that the work on the Pune Metro Rail, the first phase of which was approved by the Union cabinet, should be inaugurated by NCP supremo Sharad Pawar.
"It was Pawar who pushed the Pune Metro project during UPA Government and because of his efforts the proposal was expedited. Leaders of NCP, Congress and MNS today passed a resolution that the inauguration of project should be done at his hands," said the Mayor Prashant Jagtap.
BJP and Shiv Sena opposed the resolution, but it was passed and sent to the state government for consideration, Jagtap, an NCP leader, said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to lay the foundation stone of Metro project here on December 24.
Union cabinet approved Pune Metro Phase 1 this evening.
"I, on behalf of Pune city, thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Cabinet Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Venkaiah Naidu and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for giving their support for the ambitious project," said Anil Shirole, MP from Pune.
The promise of Metro for the city, made during the Lok Sabha election, was being fulfilled, he added.
He also appealed the people to give BJP a clear majority in the coming civic polls to ensure speedy execution of Metro project.
