NCP MP backs use of Dolby systems in festival despite HC order

Notwithstanding the Bombay High Court's refusal to lift the blanket ban on use of DJ and Dolby systems during the Ganesh Chaturthi and Navaratri festivals, an MP of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP Friday backed the use such high-volume sound systems during the period.

Udayanraje Bhosale, who represents Satara Lok Sabha constituency in western Maharashtra, also asked why Dolby sound system could not be used "within noise norms" and said a proposal to this effect would be sent to the state government.

The Bombay High Court Friday refused to lift the blanket ban on use of DJ and high-volume sound systems during the Ganesh Chaturthi and Navaratri festivals.

A home ministry circular and orders issued by police had said DJ is a source of sound pollution, and refused to issue licences on the ground that DJ/ sound systems are prohibited under the orders of the High Court and the Supreme Court.

"Dolby is to be used, right? A proposal will be sent to the government. Why can't Dolby use be allowed within the stipulated noise levels?" Bhosale, 52, told reporters here.

"You allow use of dhols (drums). These are equally noisy. When you can permit use of dhols, why can't Dolby be used? This is my opinion," he added.

Asked if he would back his supporters if police file cases against them for using DJ and Dolby systems during the ongoing Ganesh festival, Bhosale quipped, "Do you think I am the one who runs away?"
