NDMC to start spl sterilisation drive, targets 1K dogs per day

Seeking to curb the menace of stray dogs North Delhi Municipal Corporation will soon begin a special sterilisation drive with a target of sterilising 1,000 canines a day, its mayor today said.
"A special sterilisation drive would be started very soon in which 1,000 dogs would be sterilised every day. Our eventual target would be at least 1.5 lakh dogs per year," North Delhi Mayor Sanjeev Nayyar told reporters.
According to NDMC, a total of 9,283 stray dogs have been caught and sterilised during January 1, 2015 to September 28 this year.
A total of 495 dogs have been sterilised and immunised during last August, it said.

"From April-July this year 2,459 dogs have been sterilised and immunised," it added.
"Results of this drive would show after a few years but if such step is not taken, population of dogs would grow uncontrollably," Nayyar said.

He also said that sterilisation work would be "outsourced for better results". Besides, north Delhi plans to open three more sterilisation centres at Timarpur, Rohtak Road and Rohini, he said.
On action taken against stray cattle, the NDMC said, 6,407 such animals have been caught during January 1, 2015 to September 28 this year.
"Stray cow and cow progeny captured have been sent to respective barns (gosadana/goshalaas) and buffalo and buffalo progeny have been auctioned for a sum of Rs 40.34 lakh," it added in a statement.

On monkey menace issue, the civic body said, 398 monkeys have been caught during January 1, 2015 to September 28 this year and relocated to Asola Bhatti Mines Sanctuary, it said.
