The Nepal government has unveiled its policy document for the new fiscal year, setting the earthquake devastated country's reconstruction as its top priority.

President Rambaran Yadav yesterday the government's annual policy and programme in the Legislative Parliament yesterday.

The policy document envisions developing short, medium and long term work plans for rehabilitation and reconstruction in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake on April 25 and its aftershocks.

Around 9,000 people were killed and 22,000 were injured in the earthquakes in April and May.

The government has estimated a total loss of $7 billion in the disaster.

As Nepal falls in a high risk seismic zone, the government has pledged to implement policy and programme nationwide in the days ahead to mitigate the impact of such disasters.

The programme also emphasizes to review the building code of 2008 and its implementation in all the municipalities across the country.

The government plans to introduce risk sensitive land use plan and implement it across the nation.

Presenting the government's policy document, President Yadav appreciated the role played by political parties in creating conducive environment for early promulgation of the new constitution.

"The government is working to accomplish the task of drafting the new constitution in close coordination with all the political parties," he pointed out.
