Chairman of the election government, Khil Raj Regmi has said Nepal is very serious about the issue concerning Nepalese migrant workers facing various kinds of exploitations and difficulties in Qatar.
Talking to reporters upon arrival in New York yesterday to attend the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Regmi said the Ministry of Labour is investigating the issue.
He said the ministry would make necessary recommendation on the next course of action Nepal should take regarding the matter of the migrant labourers involved in construction of stadia and other infrastructure in Qatar, the host country of the 2022 Football World Cup.
Regmi is leading the Nepalese delegation to UN General Assembly.
Meanwhile, a rights group urged South Asian governments yesterday to demand proper protection for migrant workers amid outrage over the deaths of dozens of Nepalese on projects linked to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Qatar is home to some 300,000 Nepalese workers, according to government figures.
Suhas Chakma, director at the Asian Centre for Human Rights, said governments on the subcontinent had too often turned a blind eye to the "horrendous" working conditions that frequently breached international norms.
