Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi today launched 'MeruEve', a new cab service which will be chauffeured only by women drivers.
25 such cabs were flagged off by Bassi and Siddhartha Pahwa, CEO of Meru Cabs, said that in the next couple of months, the number of such cabs will be increased to 300.
Other than a woman driver, the cabs will have 3G-enabled mobile phones with 'video recording' facility which would also have Speed Dial for All SHOs for distress call number, a panic buzzer, a pepper spray and Women Helpline Numbers displayed on it prominently.
Speaking at the event, Bassi said that with the new service, if women think that they don't want to be driven home by a man, they have an option.
Referring to the Uber rape case incident, Pahwa said "last month's incident has forced us to make efforts to make our roads safer."
Other than training in driving and basic etiquettes by their employer, Delhi Police has also provided 'Self Defense Training' to all women chauffeurs.
"We have given you three-day training but we want you to continue practicing it, which will make you stronger. Many men are fools (nalayak), they attack women because they are under the impression that they are weaker. Through self-defence training, we want to fill that gap in physical ability so that you can give somebody a befitting reply if he misbehaves with you," he said.
