India, which has one of the largest concentration of patients of coronary artery disease in the world, will see the introduction of a new generation of drug-eluting stents.
"From a plain vanilla bare metal stent to the new generation Resolute Onyx drug eluting stents, it is a kind of revolution in stent technology," Chief of Adult Cardiology of Budapest-based Gottsegen Gyorgy Hungarian Institute of Cardiology Peter Andreka said.
Resolute Onyx DES which features the Core Wire Technology has thinner struts to help improve deliverability without compromising radial and longitudinal strength of the stent.
"It has proven long-term safety and efficacy and has no increased risk for stent thrombosis with interruption or discontinuation of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after a month," Andreka, who has treated around 80 patients with CAD using Resolute Onyx DES at his Institute in Budapest, said.
Core Wire Technology is the next new DES advancement after Continuous Sinusoid Technology (CST). The uniqueness is that the wrapped in a Cobalt Alloy shell, the denser, more radiopaque inner core material allows for improved visibility during procedure, referred to as radiopacity.
The Cobalt alloy shell maintains the mechanical performance and structural strength of the stent material.
"Core Wire Technology is an exciting innovation that will have measurable impact on clinical practice today and tomorrow," he said.
"When coronary stents fail to cross a tortuous anatomy they become ideal candidates for surgical revascularisation to provide relief from angina due to blocked artery. This is when Resolute Onyx DES comes into play due to its superior deliverability," the Hungarian Cardiologist said.
