Speaking on the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, he emphasised on the need to preserve the values of freedom.
"On August 9, 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave the clarion call of 'Quit India' and samajwadis took part in the movement with great enthusiasm. It is the responsibility of the new generation of samajwadis to fulfil the dream of 'suraaj' (good governance), which Mahatma Gandhi had dreamt of. It is our duty to preserve the values of freedom," the SP chief said here.
Akhilesh also hit out at the BJP government for its slew of 'anti-people' measures.
"The BJP government has cheated the farmers. The crop loan waiver and doubling their income have remained a promise. Both, the poor and the farmers are in trouble," a party statement quoted the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh as saying.
He also criticised the Centre's GST and demonetisation steps.
"Public is facing trouble due to price rise while youngsters are worried because of unemployment. The slogan of Swachh Bharat (Clean India) will be realised only when politics will be cleansed," the SP leader said.
